If you've ever thought about becoming a teacher but you are not quite sure how to put your teaching dream in practice; if you imagine yourself traveling the world, or living overseas in an exotic city but don't know how you would pay for that lifestyle; if you want a second, third or retirement career, but want to maintain your independence, here is an idea: Just do it! Become a teacher of English!
You may have questions like these: Do I know enough about English to teach it? How would I find a job? Who would be my students? How on earth would I find time to get an advanced degree? These can be easily addressed in just a few words: Don't worry - and don't make it complicated!?
First of all, if you are a native- or near-native speaker of English you are already halfway there; and second, if your time and finances are limited you should check out TEFL Town at BAE. It's the best place for teacher wannabes to become professional teachers of English as a Second or Foreign language at a fraction of the cost and time of a college-based program. In just four weeks of the intensive weekday program, or 12 Saturdays, and for a cost of about $2,500, you can earn your certificate and be ready to start your new career!
Our 120- hour accredited course combines instruction on methodologies, and skills for teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language with the preparation and delivery of 6 hours of fully-observed practice teaching with actual ESL students. In this way you will be able to put apply your new skills directly and quickly by teaching Boston Academy of English ESL students. You will learn how to teach using the "communicative" method, manage a successful multi- lingual multi-cultural and/or multi-level classroom, correct errors, give clear instructions, teach with technology and address all learning styles in their classroom.
BAE offers a friendly and supportive setting in which to experience this rigorous but enjoyable and exciting program. You will earn your certificate through daily attendance, full participation in class discussions, successful completion of reading and writing assignments, and demonstration of your new teaching skills in the ESL classroom during your six practice teaching classes.
The TEFL course is offered in two formats: Intensive, which meets for four weeks on Monday through Friday, from 10am to 5 pm and part-time, which meets on 12 Saturdays from 9am-6pm.
Once you have your certificate there will be many career paths open to you. You may simply want to volunteer at a local library or at your church. You may want to teach at a high school or language school that helps immigrants adjust to life in the US, or a school that helps foreign students prepare for entrance to a US college or university. Maybe you want to teach in another country - for the adventure, the opportunity to master another culture and language or for a unique professional experience. Your certificate will permit you to do any or all of these things
If you think this may be the course for you, you are most welcome to visit Boston Academy of English, meet with our Academic Director to discuss your interests and concerns, and participate in a half-day of class!
